The results of a recent Japanese study published in the journal Neurology indicates that diabetes appears to dramatically increase a person’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia later in life.

In the study, which included more than 1,000 men and women over age 60, researchers found that people with diabetes were twice as likely as the other study participants to develop Alzheimer’s disease within 15 years. They were also 1.75 times more likely to develop dementia of any kind.

Scientists are now investigating whether controlling blood sugar and reducing risk factors for type 2 diabetes also reduces dementia risk. The full article can be found here.

If you or a loved one have any of the risk factors, such as diabetes, that can indicate an increased risk of dementia, the time to plan ahead is now. Failing to plan for MassHealth eligibility, should you require long-term care, can turn a medical emergency into a financial catastrophe for your family. With the cost of long-term care escalating and the investment market floundering, you must act to protect your home and assets.
