Last week I was part of a panel of speakers at the Life Planning Exchange (LPX) launch party in Boston. LPX, founded by Lisa A. Maini, is designed to help Baby Boomers & Gen X transition successfully through life changing events by exchanging knowledge, experiences and inspiration with industry professionals and peers in a casual, friendly atmosphere. The launch was a great success and reminded me yet again of the powerful need for holistic planning within the elder law sphere.

Along with myself, the presenters included Janet Simpson Benvenuti, President & CEO of Circle of Life Partners, LLC and author of “Don’t Give Up on Me! Supporting Aging Parents Successfully,” Tobe Lynn Gerard, President of Tobe Gerard Insurance, LLC, Nancy B. Emerson Lombardo, Ph.D., President of HealthCare Insights, LLC and Peggy McGillin, CFP and Principal of Journey Financial Planners.

While I spoke of how estate planning can preserve assets and protect our health needs and our families, the panel also discussed the struggles many caregivers face while helping loved ones with dementia related illness, how and when long term care insurance is an appropriate option, how to preserve and stimulate our minds through healthy eating and lifestyle and how to plan our finances for retirement. This cross-section of professionals really created an engaging format to discuss the overall process of planning to live well, without relegating each integral part of our lives into their own individual silos.

Estate planning is an important part of planning for the future and preparing ourselves to be able to live the lives we desire, but it does not occur in a vacuum. Our lives are always changing, and as such, our estate plan must be updated, our financial portfolio adjusted and our diets and lifestyles tweaked from time to time. Only by taking this holistic view of our personal development are we able to create an effective plan for success, however you define it.

The Heritage Law Center is a proud proponent of this holistic approach, and invites you to call us to discuss how we can help put (or keep) you on the path to personal and family success, or refer you to one of our amazing partners in the life planning arena.
